Manila, Philippines: In a last-minute decision, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has canceled his trip to Dubai due to “important developments” concerning the hostage situation involving 17 Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea. The President was initially scheduled to attend the United Nations Climate Conference in the emirate.
“I have made the decision not to attend COP28 in Dubai tomorrow. Today, I will be convening a meeting to facilitate the dispatch of a high-level delegation to Tehran, Iran, with the aim of providing necessary assistance to our seafarers,” Marcos announced on X, formerly Twitter, just two hours before his scheduled departure.
President Marcos Jr. has entrusted DENR Secretary Ma. Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga to lead the COP28 delegation and represent the country’s interests on his behalf. Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga will articulate the country’s statement during the conference.
The Filipino seafarers are among the 22 crewmen aboard an Israeli-linked tanker that was seized by armed individuals in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday, November 27.
