The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has taken a step further in its efforts to address the persistent issue of traffic violations along the Edsa Busway. On Tuesday, the agency introduced its Special Operations Group, which will be dedicated to targeting and apprehending traffic violators in this area.
The Special Operations Group comprises 74 MMDA personnel, who will be divided into four or five groups. These teams will be under the direct supervision of Assistant General Manager for Operations, David Angelo Vargas, and its deputy officer-in-charge, Gabriel Go. With their expertise and authority, they will play a crucial role in intensifying the campaign against motorists who continue to use the Edsa busway despite the existing ban.
As part of their initial efforts, Vargas led an inspection of the busway along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City. This proactive approach demonstrates the MMDA’s commitment to ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of both commuters and motorists.
Since the implementation of the ban on November 13, the MMDA has already apprehended a significant number of violators. As of 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28, a total of 41 violators were caught in the act. Of these, 23 were riding motorcycles, 17 were in four-wheeled vehicles, and one was operating a public utility bus.
The MMDA’s record shows that the first week of implementation resulted in the apprehension of 1,262 motorists. From November 20 to 26 alone, 345 violators were caught. These numbers highlight the scale of the issue and the urgent need for enforcement to deter further violations.
