The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is determined to hold the Chinese-flagged bulk carrier accountable for colliding with a stationary Filipino fishing boat off Paluan, Occidental Mindoro. PCG Commandant Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan stated that they are coordinating with the flag state and will utilize existing protocols to pursue maritime offenders. Gavan emphasized that they will go after any users of Philippine seas who commit offenses, regardless of their location, through the established protocols with other coast guards.
In order to investigate the incident, the PCG has already reached out to the Chinese government regarding the MV Tai Hang 8, the vessel responsible for leaving five Filipino fishermen adrift after the collision. The ship was en route to Indonesia when the allision occurred and is currently in Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi. Gavan assured the public that they are closely monitoring the ship’s movements and will treat the matter seriously.
The incident took place in the waters of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro, which is part of the West Philippine Sea, on December 5th at approximately 4 p.m. The Filipino fishing boat was moored to a fishing aggregation device when it was struck by the foreign ship.
The PCG stated that the ill-fated fishing banca, named Ruel J, and its crew were left adrift as the foreign vessel unknowingly continued its voyage. Upon receiving the information about the incident on December 6th, the PCG promptly coordinated with the boat owner in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
Rescue and towing operations were conducted by three other Filipino fishing boats, FBCA Joker, FBCA Precious Heart, and FBCA Jaschene, off Pandan Island, Sablayan, in Occidental Mindoro. The five crew members of Ruel J were identified as Junrey Sardan, Ryan Jay Daus, Bryan Pangatungam, Cristian Arizala, and Joshua Barbas.
Upon arrival at the Port of Sablayan, the PCG ensured that the rescued fishermen were in good physical condition and provided them with essential supplies. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office conducted safety check-ups, and local village officials extended additional assistance to the rescued individuals. The Municipality of Sablayan and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Sablayan also pledged aid before the rescued fishermen were reunited with their immediate families.
