Melbourne: During the ASEAN-Australia summit in Melbourne, Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo expressed his country’s desire to peacefully resolve maritime disputes with China. However, he also delivered a clear message to Beijing: “stop harassing us.”
Manalo acknowledged China’s frustration with the Philippine government’s policy of publicizing maneuvers in contested maritime territories. He highlighted that if China refrained from harassing actions, there would be no news to report on the matter.
This statement came in response to the Chinese Embassy in Manila urging Philippine Ambassador Romualdez to stop spreading what they referred to as an erroneous “China threat.” China took offense to Romualdez’s comment that the “real flashpoint” in the region would be in the West Philippine Sea, rather than the Taiwan Strait. Romualdez also mentioned that skirmishes in the area sometimes caused concern for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
During a general membership meeting of the Consular Corps of the Philippines, Romualdez further emphasized that the substantial investment of P1.7 trillion from the US in Manila would serve as a countermeasure against any economic coercion from China.
In response, the Chinese embassy criticized Romualdez for using the South China Sea issue to create baseless accusations and launch a malicious smear campaign against China. They urged him to stop spreading what they deemed as erroneous “China threat” and “Sinophobia” remarks. The embassy emphasized the importance of Romualdez focusing on serving his own people and improving his country’s relations with China.
The Chinese embassy also highlighted the significant trade partnership between China and the Philippines, with China being the Philippines’ largest trading partner and a major source of investment.
