THE Philippines reaffirmed its unwavering support for providing urgent humanitarian aid and essential supplies to the Palestinian civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Speaking at the UN General Assembly Debate on “The situation in the Middle East and the question of Palestine” on November 28, 2023, at the UN headquarters in New York, Chargé d’affaires ad interim Ariel Rodelas Peñaranda emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all civilians, while also highlighting the crucial role of critical facilities such as humanitarian shelters and hospitals in addressing their immediate needs.

Peñaranda, who also serves as the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations, commended the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), and other related UN agencies for their tireless efforts and sacrifices in providing assistance during these challenging times in Gaza.

“The Philippines reiterates its commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East, with a particular focus on resolving the Israeli-Hamas hostilities. The significant presence of the Filipino community in the Middle East and Israel underscores the relevance of this issue to the Philippines, highlighting our deep concern for the peace process,” he stated.

Furthermore, Peñaranda expressed the Philippines’ joy over the release of two Filipinos who were held hostage by Hamas for nearly 50 days in Gaza. This development serves as a reminder of the urgent need for all parties involved to implement immediate solutions that prevent the conflict from escalating further. He emphasized that it is in the best interest of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, as well as all states in the region, to ensure that the conflict does not extend beyond Gaza and risk engulfing the wider region in turmoil.

“The Philippines firmly supports a two-state solution, consistently aligned with relevant UN resolutions and international agreements. We firmly believe that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve a future where their rights, aspirations, and security are acknowledged and upheld,” Peñaranda asserted.

He further emphasized that a lasting resolution can only emerge through diplomatic engagement, dialogue, and comprehensive negotiations between all parties involved, all rooted in international law. Peñaranda called on nations to unite not only in seeking temporary relief but also in pursuing lasting peace and dignity for all within the region.

The Philippines’ unwavering commitment to providing humanitarian assistance and advocating for peace in the Middle East reflects the country’s dedication to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and compassion. As a nation with a significant Filipino community in the Middle East and Israel, the Philippines understands the importance of addressing conflicts that directly affect its citizens abroad.

By reaffirming its support for a two-state solution and calling for diplomatic engagement, the Philippines demonstrates its belief in the power of dialogue and negotiation to achieve lasting peace. The country’s stance aligns with the international community’s efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Hamas hostilities, ensuring that the rights and security of both Israelis and Palestinians are respected.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to unfold, the Philippines remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts and advocating for a peaceful resolution. The country’s dedication to the cause underscores the significance of international cooperation in addressing global crises and promoting stability in the Middle East.
