Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. emphasized the urgent need for the Philippines to enhance its defense capability in order to counter China’s expansionist claims in the West Philippine Sea. Additionally, Chinese ships have been harassing boats delivering supplies to Filipino soldiers stationed at the Ayungin Shoal.
To effectively respond to challenges to its sovereignty in the disputed areas, the Philippines must develop robust armed forces and defense mechanisms, as emphasized by Teodoro. Building a resilient, redundant, and self-reliant defense system is crucial. In line with this objective, the Defense department is actively strengthening its logistical capability.
The Defense department has established logistical reserves and is committed to efficient project management and acquisitions, as well as optimizing human capabilities. Motivating the right skills and people for the right job is essential in building a strong defense architecture. Teodoro emphasized the need for a flexible, adaptable, sustainable, redundant, and realistic philosophy of operation.
