President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. commended the advancements made in the government’s ongoing battle against illegal drugs, highlighting the apprehension and prosecution of individuals involved in the narcotics trade. In a video message released by Malacañang on Tuesday, Marcos revealed that 177 personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been arrested and charged with drug-related offenses, including the planting of evidence, unlawful arrest, and excessive violence.
With determination, the government is currently pursuing 151,818 court cases, resulting in 121,582 drug trade violators already behind bars. These statistics not only demonstrate the government’s relentless efforts to combat the issue of illegal drugs but also its commitment to establishing and maintaining drug-free communities, as stated by the Chief Executive.
“We are truly dedicated to enhancing our communities, improving the quality of life for our fellow countrymen, and steering our youth away from the destructive path of drug addiction,” Marcos emphasized.
Earlier reports from the Palace revealed that authorities seized a staggering P10.41 billion worth of illegal drugs between January and December 2023. Furthermore, over 27,000 villages have been cleared of narcotics under the President’s new approach to addressing the drug menace. Alongside the confiscation of large volumes of illegal drugs, the PNP has apprehended 56,495 suspects through more than 44,000 anti-illegal drug operations.
The government’s progress in the fight against illegal drugs is the result of collaborative efforts among various agencies, including the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Dangerous Drugs Board, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and PNP. As of December 27, 2023, a total of 27,968 villages have been declared drug-free, with 23 provinces, 447 municipalities, and 43 cities implementing their respective community-based drug rehabilitation programs.
Additionally, 50 provinces, 1,160 municipalities, and 30 cities have established functional Anti-Drug Abuse Councils, which prioritize anti-drug initiatives at the local level. To support the rehabilitation process, 74 in-patient treatment and rehabilitation facilities have been established.
