President Marcos Jr. Issues Landmark Executive Order Promoting LGBTQIA+ Rights

MANILA, Philippines: In a historic move, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has issued an Executive Order creating a special committee to advocate for the rights and affairs of the LGBTQIA community in the Philippines. This significant development has been praised by civil rights group LGBT Pilipinas, marking a milestone in the country’s journey towards inclusivity and equality.

Under Executive Order No. 51, President Marcos reinforces the country’s Diversity and Inclusion Program, reconstitutes the Inter-Agency Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, and establishes the special committee on LGBTQIA affairs. This committee will be led by a chairman with the rank of undersecretary, along with three members holding the rank of assistant secretary.

Dindi Tan, the national president of LGBT Pilipinas, expressed her gratitude for the creation of this committee. She revealed that she personally lobbied for its establishment during a Pride event at the Palace last June, an idea that was warmly welcomed by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos. Tan described this development as a dream come true for the LGBTQIA community, believing it to be the start of many positive changes to come.

President Marcos emphasized the need to strengthen existing mechanisms to address the continued discrimination faced by members of the LGBTQIA community. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring the country’s compliance with its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Tan commended President Marcos for his responsiveness to their appeal, stating that it demonstrates a commitment to fostering inclusivity, understanding, and equality for all Filipinos, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. She believes that this executive order holds immense implications for the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA rights and equality in the Philippines.
