The Lowy Institute of Australia, a renowned think tank, has recently acknowledged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as “one of the most interesting, influential, and closely-watched leaders” in Southeast Asia. Dr. Michael Fullilove, the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute, highlighted the President’s significant role as a regional leader within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During his address to the Australian Parliament last week, President Marcos emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to defending its sovereignty. Dr. Fullilove, speaking at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, praised President Marcos’ leadership since his election in 2022, stating, “If there’s anyone who thinks individuals don’t matter in politics, I’d invite them to look at the changes in the Philippines in the past 18 months, in particular the way that Manila has become so much more determined to defend its sovereignty.”
President Marcos received applause from the audience at the Lowy Institute for his firm stance on the West Philippine Sea dispute. He declared, “We shall never surrender even a square inch of our territory and our maritime jurisdiction.” The President also highlighted the ongoing efforts of his government to enhance the capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
President Marcos stressed the importance of ensuring the unimpeded and peaceful exploration and exploitation of natural resources within the Philippines’ jurisdiction. He emphasized the need to guarantee the safety and prosperity of Filipino nationals, Philippine corporations, and those authorized by the Philippine Government. By doing so, the President aims to contribute to the preservation of the rules-based international order, which has been pivotal in driving the economic growth and prosperity of countries like Australia.
In his speech, President Marcos recognized the Indo-Pacific region’s vulnerability to the impact of great power rivalries. He emphasized the significance of addressing these rivalries to safeguard the survival and well-being of the region’s peoples and communities. The President highlighted the shared responsibility of countries in the Indo-Pacific to uphold the rules-based international order and navigate the challenges posed by these rivalries.
The recognition by the Lowy Institute underscores President Marcos’ growing influence and the international attention he has garnered. His unwavering commitment to defending the Philippines’ sovereignty and promoting regional stability has positioned him as a key leader in Southeast Asia. As President Marcos continues to prioritize the country’s interests and strengthen international partnerships, his leadership will undoubtedly shape the future of the Philippines and its role within the wider ASEAN community.
