MANILA, Philippines: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is embarking on a significant trip to Germany and the Czech Republic, where he will engage in discussions with his European counterparts on crucial matters such as maritime and labor cooperation, climate change, and economic collaborations. This working visit and state visit will serve as an opportunity to foster stronger relationships and explore new avenues of cooperation.
The Chief Executive will first visit Berlin from March 11 to 13, followed by Prague from March 13 to 15. The invitations extended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Czech Republic President Petr Pavel reflect the growing importance of bilateral ties between the Philippines and these European nations.
Prior to his departure, President Marcos will hold a meeting with United States Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and her delegation in Malacañang. This meeting aims to discuss ways to further enhance trade and investment ties between Manila and the US, one of the Philippines’ top three trading partners, alongside Japan and China.
Strengthening Trade and Investment Opportunities
Assistant Secretary Maria Elena Algabre of the Department of Foreign Affairs highlighted the President’s focus on bolstering trade and investment opportunities in the Philippines during his time in Germany and the Czech Republic. The President aims to attract German and Czech companies to increase their presence in the country, contributing to economic growth and job creation.
As part of his agenda, President Marcos will participate in business forums in both countries, engaging with prominent business leaders. These forums will provide a platform for dialogue, exchange of ideas, and exploration of potential partnerships that can drive mutual economic benefits.
Maritime and Labor Cooperation
The discussions on maritime and labor cooperation will be of utmost importance during President Marcos’ visit. With the Philippines being an archipelago, maritime issues play a significant role in the nation’s development. Collaborating with Germany and the Czech Republic, both renowned for their maritime expertise, can lead to valuable knowledge sharing and joint initiatives to ensure maritime security, sustainable fishing practices, and disaster response capabilities.
Labor cooperation will also be a key topic of discussion, particularly in light of the significant number of Filipino workers employed in Germany and the Czech Republic. Exploring ways to protect the rights and welfare of Filipino workers, fostering skills development, and promoting fair labor practices will be crucial to strengthening the bilateral relationship and ensuring the well-being of Filipino workers abroad.
Addressing Climate Change
Climate change is a global challenge that requires collaborative efforts. President Marcos will engage in discussions with his European counterparts on strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable development. The exchange of knowledge, technology, and best practices can contribute to the Philippines’ ongoing efforts to address climate change and build a resilient future.
Looking Ahead
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to Germany and the Czech Republic presents a valuable opportunity to deepen ties, expand economic partnerships, and address key global issues.
