MANILA, Philippines: The result of a survey conducted by OCTA Research has revealed significant support for the government’s defense of Philippine sovereignty, according to San Jose del Monte Rep. Florida “Rida” Robes. The survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents, was commissioned by the Armed Forces of the Philippines amid incidents of harassment by the Chinese Coast Guard of Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea.
The poll findings indicated that an impressive 77 percent of Filipinos were willing to fight for the country in the event of war. This overwhelming response demonstrates a deep-rooted sense of patriotism and a strong commitment to safeguarding the nation.
Robes, a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, viewed the survey as an “affirmation” of the government’s efforts to secure the nation. She emphasized that the results serve as a “patriotic gauge,” highlighting the willingness of Filipinos to serve when called upon. This sentiment reflects a profound love for their country, dispelling any doubts about the Filipino people’s commitment to defending the flag.
Referring to the stanza of the Philippine National Anthem, Robes added, “It is our countrymen articulating their agreement to what they have been singing with fervor–sa manlulupig, ‘di ka pasisiil.” This demonstrates that the survey results align with the passionate sentiments expressed in the anthem, further solidifying the unity and determination of the Filipino people.
However, it is crucial to note that the survey’s findings should not be interpreted as a call to arms or an abandonment of diplomatic means to resolve disputes. Robes emphasized the importance of using diplomatic channels to address conflicts and urged a peaceful resolution.
House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez welcomed the survey results and acknowledged the regional differences in responses. The highest percentage of those willing to fight for the flag was in Mindanao at 84 percent, followed by Balance Luzon at 79 percent, Metro Manila at 76 percent, and Visayas at 62 percent. Despite these regional variations, Romualdez emphasized that all Filipinos share a common desire to protect the nation’s integrity.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has advocated for the peaceful resolution of territorial disputes with China, signaling the government’s commitment to resolving conflicts through diplomatic means.
The survey, conducted from Dec. 10 to 14, 2023, through face-to-face interviews, involved a representative sample of 1,200 adult respondents. With a ±3 percent margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level, the survey results provide valuable insights into the sentiments of the Filipino people regarding the defense of Philippine sovereignty.
The overwhelming support expressed in the survey underscores the deep-rooted patriotism and commitment of Filipinos to protect their country. It serves as a reminder that, when it comes to defending the nation’s sovereignty, the Filipino people are united and ready to answer the call. However, it is essential to remember that diplomatic solutions should always be pursued to resolve disputes peacefully and maintain regional stability.
