(UPDATE) MALACAÑANG on Friday called on Filipinos to remain united in rejecting any destabilizing proposals, particularly calls to separate Mindanao from the rest of the country.

“When we, as Filipinos, are united, there is peace, development, and prosperity. But when we, as a people, are divided, there is instability, underdevelopment, and disorder,” emphasized Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. in a statement released by the Palace.

Galvez further emphasized the importance of turning away from any call or movement that aims to destabilize the beloved nation, especially those advocating for the separation of Mindanao from the rest of the country. He highlighted that such a move contradicts the spirit of the Philippine Constitution and would erase the dividends of the comprehensive peace process that has put an end to decades of armed conflict in Mindanao.

“As Filipinos, let us therefore continue supporting the Marcos administration’s peace, reconciliation, and unity agenda. The dividends of peace are upon us and are now being felt by everyone,” Galvez urged.

He pointed out that the success of the peace process is evident in the willingness of former revolutionary groups in Mindanao to actively participate in nation-building. Mindanao has transformed from a land of volatility, violence, and armed struggle into a symbol of hope, mutual understanding, and solidarity. It stands as a shining example that good things come to those who choose the path of peace.

“We cannot afford to go back to square one. We must learn from the lessons of the past and apply them to all aspects of our lives as peace-loving citizens. Let us always choose peace and remain united, as it is the only way to move forward as one people and one nation,” Galvez emphasized.

Earlier this week, former President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned the possibility of Mindanao secession through a signature campaign, citing Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez as the one who first brought up the idea.

“There is a process in the UN (United Nations) where you would gather signatures in Mindanao, verifying under oath, in the presence of many people, that you want a separate nation,” Duterte explained during a news conference in Davao City.

Duterte expressed confidence in Mindanao’s ability to stand on its own as an independent entity, given its abundance of natural resources.

“We have everything, and yet we give all our resources to the Visayas and Luzon. Mindanao is rich,” Duterte highlighted.

It is crucial for Filipinos to understand the potential consequences of such a separation. While it may seem tempting to some, it is essential to recognize that unity is the foundation for peace, development, and prosperity. Divisions only lead to instability, underdevelopment, and disorder. The comprehensive peace process that has been achieved in Mindanao should not be undermined. It has transformed the region from a place of conflict to a beacon of hope and progress.

Mindanao’s success in shedding its image of volatility and armed struggle is a testament to the power of peace and unity. Former revolutionary groups are now actively participating in nation-building, contributing to the overall development of the country. This progress should not be taken for granted.

As Filipinos, it is our responsibility to support the peace, reconciliation, and unity agenda set forth by the government. The dividends of peace are tangible and benefit every citizen. By choosing the path of peace, we can ensure a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.

The recent mention of Mindanao secession should not be taken lightly. While it is important to acknowledge the region’s abundance of natural resources, it is equally important to recognize that unity and cooperation are vital for sustainable development. Dividing the country would disrupt the progress made and hinder the potential for further growth.

Let us remember the lessons of the past and the value of unity. By rejecting calls for separation and remaining united, we can continue to build a prosperous and peaceful nation. Together, we can overcome challenges and achieve a brighter future for all Filipinos.
