MANILA, Philippines: The recent bombing incident at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City has prompted the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) Chairman J. Prospero de Vera 3rd to take immediate action. As the concurrent chairman of the MSU Board of Regents, de Vera has expressed his commitment to reviewing and enhancing the university’s policies to ensure the safety and security of its students and staff.

In a statement released on Sunday, de Vera emphasized the need to prevent such horrific events from happening again. He urged other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to follow suit and prioritize safety measures within their respective campuses.

De Vera, in his capacity as the CHED Chairman, expressed deep sadness and shock over the bombing incident that occurred at the Dimaporo Gymnasium during a Catholic mass. He firmly stated that violence has no place in a civilized society, especially within an institution of higher learning.

The Chairman also pledged to work closely with the MSU President and officials to provide necessary counseling and support to those affected by the incident, particularly the university’s students and staff.

De Vera called upon the public to join him in praying for the victims, their families, and the entire MSU community. He assured that government authorities are providing assistance and ensuring security and protection for all.

Following the incident, Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Ziaur-Rahman Alonto Adiong urged the House of Representatives to review the security plans and policies in place. Adiong, in his privilege speech during the House’s plenary session, highlighted the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by MSU-Marawi City.

Adiong emphasized the logistical nightmare presented by the sheer size of the MSU main campus in Marawi City. He called for a comprehensive review of the university’s charter, current security plans and policies, and relevant laws affecting the peace and order situation in the region.

Recognizing the complexity of the issue, Adiong stressed the need to assist MSU in improving its capability to prevent future tragedies. He urged the House of Representatives to work together towards safeguarding the stability of the region.

Expressing his gratitude, Adiong commended fellow lawmakers who condemned the bombing and extended their condolences. He assured the victims that his office and the provincial government swiftly mobilized assistance, providing support at the Amai Pakpak Medical Center and assuring them that their medical bills would be taken care of.

In addition to the government’s efforts, the Gabriela Women’s Party issued a strong condemnation of the bombing incident. Representative Arlene Brosas, House assistant minority leader, urged the public to exercise vigilance against disinformation and misguided rage.

As investigations into the incident continue, the international community stands in solidarity with the victims and their families. It is crucial to prioritize safety and security measures within educational institutions, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and growth.

The MSU bombing incident serves as a reminder that violence has no place in any society, and it is the responsibility of government authorities, educational institutions, and the public to work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.

Let us honor the memory of those who lost their lives in this tragic event by standing united against hatred and violence, and by actively supporting initiatives that promote peace and security within our communities.
