In a recent statement, Vice President Sara Duterte expressed her concerns about the efforts to amend the Constitution through a people’s initiative, likening it to the act of vote buying by politicians. The signature campaign, led by proponents who want the Senate and House of Representatives to vote jointly as a constituent assembly for introducing amendments to the charter, has raised alarm bells for Duterte.

Duterte emphasized that the signature campaign is being used to exploit poor Filipinos, highlighting the disregard politicians have for the true situation of ordinary citizens. She warned Filipinos about the serious consequences that may arise from exchanging their signatures for the people’s initiative, affecting their lives, freedom, and future. Duterte believes that pushing for this initiative without addressing the pressing issues of poverty, peace, and order is a clear indication of a failure to understand and resolve the true problems faced by Filipinos.

The Vice President also expressed her alarm over the recent Travel Advisory issued by Canada, which advises its citizens against traveling to certain parts of the country due to concerns about crime, terrorism, armed conflict, and kidnapping. Duterte voiced her worries that this advisory may be just the beginning of a more serious security problem in the community. She urged everyone to prioritize addressing the problems faced by Filipinos before focusing on attracting foreign investments.

Duterte’s brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, has also criticized the signature campaign for the people’s initiative, asserting that it represents the voice of a few who seek to perpetuate themselves in power rather than reflecting the true will of the people.

Albay Rep. Jose Maria Clemente “Joey” Salceda, a staunch supporter of charter change, disclosed that the supporters of the people’s initiative aim to complete the planned plebiscite by July. However, Salceda denied that it would be a “gift” for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his State of the Nation Address (SONA). Kabataan Party-list Executive Vice President Renee Louise Co suggested that the revelation of a July timeline indicates that the moves to change the Constitution originated from the Palace itself, as President Marcos Jr. possesses the power to fund and lead such a political operation.

It is crucial to critically analyze and evaluate the implications of any proposed changes to the Constitution. The concerns raised by Vice President Sara Duterte shed light on the potential consequences of the people’s initiative and the need to prioritize addressing the pressing issues faced by Filipinos. As the debate surrounding charter change continues, it is essential to ensure that the voices and interests of all Filipinos are taken into account.
