Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go has been a strong advocate for enhancing the quality of life for the elderly and building senior citizen-friendly communities. In his address at the 2nd National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC)-National Capital Region Stakeholders’ Summit, he emphasized his unwavering commitment to the welfare of senior citizens.
Go’s personal connection to the cause became evident as he shared fond memories of his grandmother. Growing up in Davao, his grandmother used to bring him to Manila, creating a deep bond and instilling in him a profound respect for the elderly. This personal influence shaped his dedication to improving the lives of senior citizens.
Recognizing the significant role seniors play in families and communities, Go stressed the importance of cherishing the time spent with elderly loved ones and acknowledging their invaluable contributions to our lives. He firmly believes in taking care of our grandparents and ensuring their well-being.
Addressing the seniors directly, Go emphasized the importance of open communication with the government and their respective organizations. He highlighted the enactment of Republic Act (RA) 11350, which created the NCSC, during the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte. This legislation serves as a platform for seniors to voice their concerns and collaborate with the government to address their needs.
As a staunch advocate for the welfare of senior citizens, Go co-authored RA 11916, an “Act Increasing the Social Pension of Indigent Senior Citizens,” which amended RA 7432, the first “Senior Citizens Act.” This amendment represents a significant step forward in ensuring a better quality of life for our senior citizens. Go emphasized the importance of providing the necessary support to allow them to live comfortably.
Furthermore, Go co-authored and co-sponsored Senate Bill (SB) 2028, principally sponsored by Sen. Ma. Imelda Josefa “Imee” Marcos. This bill aims to provide additional support to individuals who have reached 80 and 90 years old. The proposal seeks to amend the Centenarian Act of 2016, extending support even to those who are nearing the milestone of a century.
Go also highlighted the cultural significance of caring for the elderly and stressed the importance of providing them with financial support while they can still benefit from and enjoy it. By ensuring that seniors receive the necessary assistance, we can help them lead fulfilling lives and contribute to society.
Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go’s dedication to the welfare of senior citizens is commendable. Through his advocacy, he aims to create senior citizen-friendly communities and enhance the quality of life for the elderly. His personal experiences and commitment to open communication with the government and their organizations reflect his genuine concern for the well-being of senior citizens. By supporting legislation that provides additional support and increasing social pensions, Go strives to ensure that senior citizens receive the necessary assistance to live comfortably and enjoy their golden years.
