Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Persist Despite Harassment

In the wake of a confrontation with China Coast Guard vessels, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ships remain in the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal). Despite facing harassment and provocative actions, the PCG and BFAR vessels continue their maritime patrol and carry out operations to support Filipino fishermen.

The Confrontation and Damage Assessment

After being blasted by water cannons from China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels, the PCG and BFAR vessels regrouped approximately 20 nautical miles from the shoal. They conducted an immediate damage assessment to evaluate the impact of the confrontation.

Initial reports from personnel onboard indicate that the PCG vessel suffered damage to a part of its superstructure from targeted high-pressure water cannoning by CCG vessels. On the other hand, the BFAR vessel sustained damage to its HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), electrical, navigation, and radio systems. Superficial hull damage was also reported as the vessel was subjected to multiple instances of targeted high-pressure water cannoning and ramming by both CCG and Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM) vessels.

Philippines’ Determination to Protect Maritime Zones and Fisherfolk

Despite the harassment and provocative actions, the Philippines remains resolute in pursuing legitimate and lawful activities in its maritime zones, including Bajo de Masinloc, which is a vital source of livelihood for Filipino fisherfolk. The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea expressed this determination in a statement, emphasizing that the Philippines will not be deterred.

BRP Bagacay and BRP Datu Bankaw were assigned to carry out a legitimate maritime patrol in the waters near Bajo de Masinloc and to distribute fuel and food supplies to Filipino fishermen. Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, affirmed that despite the harassment and provocative actions of the CCG, both the PCG and BFAR vessels will persist in their operations to support Filipino fishermen.
