SEN. Maria Josefa Imelda “Imee” Marcos has called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to take immediate action in securing the lease of the automated counting system for the upcoming national and local elections in 2025. In her appeal, Senator Marcos emphasizes the importance of ensuring clean and honest elections for the people.
According to Senator Marcos, time is of the essence as the 2025 elections are fast approaching. It is crucial for the Comelec to thoroughly vet and assess the background and track record of the potential bidders for the automated counting system. The senator believes that the people deserve elections that are free from any blemish and must have confidence in the integrity of the critical counting system.
Joining Senator Marcos in her call for a secure lease of the automated counting system are Senators Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Christopher “Bong” Go, Francis Tolentino, Pilar Juliana “Pia” Cayetano, and Manuel “Lito” Lapid, who are all up for reelection.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd has raised concerns about the high rental rates for the “modern” automatic counting machines (ACMs). In November 2023, Senator Pimentel questioned the proposed allocation of P19.799 billion for the rental of the ACMs by the Comelec. He argues that the rental rate of P155,000 per ACM is excessively high, especially considering the financial challenges faced by the government, including a significant budget deficit.
Senator Pimentel further questions the significant increase in the price tag of the ACMs. Previously, the Comelec had indicated a requirement for only 97,000 ACMs for the upcoming midterm elections. However, the rental cost per unit has ballooned from P70,000 to P155,000, a dramatic 121 percent increase. Senator Pimentel believes that the Comelec needs to provide a clear explanation for this sudden surge in cost.
In order to ensure transparency and accountability, it is vital for the Comelec to address the concerns raised by Senator Pimentel and other lawmakers. The cost of the automated counting machines should be justifiable and reasonable, considering the current financial situation of the government. The Comelec must be able to demonstrate that the allocation of funds for the lease of the ACMs is a wise and responsible decision.
As the 2025 national and local elections draw near, the Comelec must prioritize the security and efficiency of the automated counting system. By thoroughly evaluating the potential suppliers and addressing concerns regarding rental rates, the Comelec can instill confidence in the electoral process and assure the Filipino people that their votes will be counted accurately and fairly.
In conclusion, the call to secure the lease of the automated counting system for the 2025 elections is a crucial step towards ensuring clean and honest elections in the Philippines. Senators, including Maria Josefa Imelda “Imee” Marcos and Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd, have raised important concerns about the rental rates and transparency of the process. It is essential for the Comelec to address these concerns and provide a clear explanation to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. By doing so, the Comelec can uphold the trust of the Filipino people and guarantee a fair and credible election in 2025.
