The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced on Friday that no tropical cyclones are expected to enter the country’s area of responsibility until the end of 2023. This means that Filipinos can look forward to celebrating Christmas Day under generally fair weather, with only scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon or at night.
Weather specialist Benison Estareja expressed optimism about the weather conditions for the remainder of the year. “Based on Pagasa’s data and analysis, it looks like the year 2023 will end without any storm entering the country,” Estareja said.
However, while there may be no tropical cyclones, Pagasa noted that the trough of the low pressure area, formerly known as Tropical Depression “Kabayan,” is still affecting certain areas outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. This, along with the shear line, is bringing overcast skies with scattered rains over mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Quezon, and the Kalayaan Islands.
In specific regions, such as Metro Manila, the rest of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur, cloudy skies with rains are expected due to the northeast monsoon or “amihan.”
On the other hand, the easterlies and localized thunderstorms are affecting Visayas, Mindanao, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), and the rest of the Bicol Region. These areas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, according to the state-run weather agency.
It is important to note that the absence of tropical cyclones does not mean that other weather disturbances cannot occur. Localized thunderstorms and the northeast monsoon can still bring rain showers and thunderstorms to certain areas. Therefore, it is advisable for individuals to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and advisories from Pagasa to ensure their safety and preparedness.
For those planning outdoor activities or traveling during the holiday season, it is recommended to take necessary precautions and be aware of the local weather conditions. While the overall forecast is favorable, it is always better to be prepared for any unexpected changes in the weather.
As we approach the end of 2023, the absence of tropical cyclones entering the Philippines is certainly good news. It allows Filipinos to enjoy the holiday season with a greater sense of security and peace of mind. Let us make the most of this fair weather and cherish the joyous moments with our loved ones.
