In a recent hearing at the Criminal Court, a 43-year-old man faced charges of drug abuse. The defendant openly admitted to consuming drugs and pleaded with the court for forgiveness, stating, “Since I was 16 years old, I have spent my life behind bars. I confess that I have used heroin, and I ask God and then you to forgive me,” as reported by Al-Rai daily.
When the court confronted the accused, stating, “You are accused of using heroin,” the defendant affirmed the accusation. The court then added, “You are accused of using psychotropic substances,” to which the accused responded with a simple “Yes.”
Further charges were presented by the court, stating, “You are accused of stealing a vehicle and being in an abnormal condition.” The accused admitted to stealing the vehicle but claimed that he believed it was his own. The court then continued, “You caused an accident while driving the stolen vehicle at a speed higher than the specified limit.” The accused, overcome with emotion, began to cry hysterically and pleaded, “Your Honor, I confess to everything. I ask God and then you to pardon me. Since I was 16 years old, my life has been spent in prison. My first case was a theft for which I was imprisoned, and after that, I started using drugs. I swear to God, I repent, but there is no one to hear me.”
The court questioned the accused, asking, “Why did you not try to seek treatment?” The accused, who claimed to be the eldest among his siblings, expressed his remorse and requested assistance, saying, “No one helped me, and I repent. I ask for your help, Your Honor. I have spent my life in prison since I was 16, and now, at 43, I want to live the rest of my days with my family.”
Upon hearing the accused’s plea, the court decided to appoint a lawyer for the defendant and review the case file.
