The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) is urging private companies to implement work-from-home (WFH) arrangements as a precautionary measure amidst the rising number of Covid-19 cases. Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma emphasized that WFH not only reduces the risk of virus transmission in workplaces but also protects the workers’ families from contracting the disease.

Under the Telecommuting Act, certain jobs are suitable for remote work, while others require face-to-face interaction. For instance, professions like embalmers necessitate in-person work. Secretary Laguesma emphasized the need to strike a balance between the two approaches, ensuring the safety of employees while maintaining essential services.

Regarding Covid-19 testing in worksites, Secretary Laguesma clarified that the Department cannot impose mandatory antigen testing. However, he strongly advised individuals experiencing symptoms to undergo voluntary testing. Labor Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez highlighted that the Department had previously issued a labor advisory to inform both employees and employers about their rights and obligations in implementing WFH arrangements.
