MANILA, Philippines: The recent bombing at the Mindanao State University gym, which claimed the lives of four individuals and injured numerous others during a Catholic service on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, has been attributed to the terrorist group IS (Islamic State), according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“The AFP is currently verifying the claims made by ISIS (another name for IS) in recent news reports, as well as the involvement of the Di-Maute Group in these heinous acts of terror,” stated AFP Public Affairs Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad.

Shortly after the blast, a foreign news report indicated that IS had sent a telegram claiming responsibility for the bombing. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr., during a briefing, mentioned the presence of strong indications of a foreign element, classifying the incident as a “terrorist crime.” However, he refrained from providing further details to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation.

Col. Trinidad emphasized that the AFP, in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP), is meticulously analyzing fragments of a 40mm mortar to determine the bomb signature. This analysis will aid in identifying the primary culprits behind the attack.

“The AFP has already initiated its investigation in coordination with the PNP to identify the terrorist group responsible for the bombing, utilizing the bomb signature as a crucial piece of evidence,” Trinidad confirmed.

Prior to the explosion, the AFP had successfully neutralized three prominent leaders of the IS-inspired Daulah Maute group in separate military operations conducted in Basilan and Lanao del Sur. Lt. Col. Brawner suggested that the recent explosion in Malawi City might be a retaliatory act following the deaths of these terrorist leaders.

“The AFP remains unwavering in its commitment to protect the people and the state from various threat groups, both foreign and domestic,” affirmed Trinidad in an updated statement from the AFP.

Records indicate that the Daulah Islamiyah currently has only 41 remaining operatives out of the more than 100 fighters who continue to exert influence in the South, despite facing significant setbacks due to the military’s relentless efforts in combating the terror cell.

It is essential to remain vigilant and work collectively to ensure the safety and security of the nation. The AFP and the PNP will continue to cooperate closely to bring the perpetrators of this horrific act to justice.
