Tragedy Strikes as Catholic Church Balcony Collapses, Resulting in Casualties and Injuries

MANILA, Philippines: (UPDATE) An octogenarian tragically lost her life due to injuries sustained in the collapse of a balcony during a Catholic Church’s Ash Wednesday Mass in Bulacan. The incident left 52 devotees injured, who were promptly treated in various hospitals in the city. Mayor Arthur Robes personally inspected the Saint Peter Parish Church in Barangay Tungkong Mangga in San Jose del Monte and directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to thoroughly assess the entire structure to prevent any future accidents.

Mayor Robes ensured that the injured devotees received immediate assistance, with the city government covering their hospital expenses and notifying their families about the incident. While some devotees remained hospitalized, others were discharged to recover at home.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. during the ceremony of applying ashes to the foreheads of the devotees inside the church. The balcony, constructed with wooden materials, unexpectedly collapsed, causing injury to those who were either seated or standing, as reported by the CDRRMO.

The Ash Wednesday Mass at the Tungkong Mangga Church had an attendance of approximately 400 people. The tragedy has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the safety of religious structures.
