Veteran Actor Tirso Cruz 3rd Resigns as Chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines
Veteran actor Tirso Cruz 3rd has recently announced his resignation as the Chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), effective March 6. In a sit-down interview with The Manila Times, FDCP Technical Consultant Jose Javier Reyes shed light on the reasons behind Cruz’s decision, stating that it was due to personal reasons.
A Personal Decision, Not Civil Service Disqualification
Reyes clarified that Cruz’s resignation was not due to civil service disqualification, as the position of FDCP Chairman is an appointed one by the President and does not require passing the civil service exam. He emphasized that assumptions suggesting otherwise are not only damaging but also ridiculous.
Continuity in FDCP Operations
Rica Arevalo, who currently oversees the festivals and education department of the FDCP, has been selected as the Officer in Charge (OIC) by the board of trustees until the appointment of a new chairman by the Palace. Reyes assured that despite Cruz’s departure, the national film agency will continue its operations without disruption.
“You can’t just stop because your chairman resigned. There is an OIC in place, and the programs and operations of the FDCP must go on. Some of the programs are already underway or nearing completion, so continuity is crucial,” Reyes explained.
Transition from Liza Diño to Tirso Cruz 3rd
Tirso Cruz 3rd took over the role of FDCP Chairman from actress-beauty queen Liza Diño in July 2022. Diño was originally expected to hold the position until next year, as she was reappointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte.
FDCP’s Focus on Education and Development
Earlier this year, the FDCP announced a 30 percent reduction in its annual budget. Despite this setback, the council outlined its plans to prioritize the implementation of programs aimed at the education and development of filmmakers, students, and Filipino audiences.
The FDCP recognizes the importance of nurturing talent and fostering a vibrant film industry in the Philippines. By focusing on education and development, the council aims to empower filmmakers, equip students with the necessary skills, and engage Filipino audiences through meaningful cinematic experiences.
These programs will not only contribute to the growth of the local film industry but also enhance the cultural landscape of the Philippines. By supporting aspiring filmmakers and providing opportunities for learning and collaboration, the FDCP envisions a future where Filipino cinema continues to make a significant impact both locally and internationally.
Despite the challenges brought about by budget cuts, the FDCP remains committed to its mission of promoting and supporting Philippine cinema. The council understands that the creative industry plays a vital role in shaping national identity, fostering cultural exchange, and contributing to economic growth.
As the FDCP moves forward under new leadership, it will continue to adapt to the evolving needs of the industry and explore innovative ways to support filmmakers, nurture talent, and showcase the rich diversity of Philippine cinema to audiences around the world.
