Six suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and a soldier were killed in a fierce gun battle in Batangas on Sunday. The clash occurred in Brgy Malalay, Balayan, Batangas, leaving three other army troopers wounded, according to Lt. Col. Hector Estolas, the 2nd Infantry Division Public Affairs Office chief.
The rebels were identified as members of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee’s Sub-Regional Military Area 4C. In response to intelligence received regarding an upcoming meeting of insurgents in the area, government forces from the 59th Infantry Battalion, along with Navy and Air Force personnel, launched a combat operation in Malalay village.
During the operation, government troops discovered a temporary rebel encampment where they recovered two M16 rifles, a M653 rifle, a shotgun, and subversive documents. Lt. Col. Estolas explained, “Based on a report we got from our informants, they (rebels) were going to have a meeting there. We learned about it (meeting) so we conducted the operation.”
He further added, “They are having a meeting and our guess is it’s related to their (Communist Party of the Philippines) anniversary on December 26.”
In response to the incident, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed his condolences to the family of the slain trooper. He commended the bravery and heroism of the soldiers in protecting the country from threats. Teodoro assured that the wounded soldiers would receive the best medical care and that the necessary assistance would be provided to the family of the fallen soldier during this difficult time.
It is important to note that the New People’s Army (NPA) is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The NPA has been engaged in a protracted insurgency for decades, seeking to overthrow the Philippine government and establish a communist regime. The clash in Batangas is a testament to the ongoing efforts of the government to combat insurgency and protect the country’s stability.
While the loss of life is always tragic, it is crucial to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of the soldiers who put their lives on the line to maintain peace and security. Their bravery serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the government in its fight against insurgency.
As the government continues its operations against rebel groups, it is important for citizens to remain vigilant and support the efforts to maintain law and order. Cooperation between the public and the authorities is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.
It is hoped that incidents like the clash in Batangas will serve as a reminder of the need for peace and stability in the Philippines. The government’s commitment to protecting its citizens and maintaining law and order is paramount in fostering a secure environment for the nation’s progress and development.
