House lawmakers belonging to the Makabayan bloc have expressed their disapproval of Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Apollo Quiboloy’s recent statements. Quiboloy claimed that some women were “fighting” for his riches and alleged that he was being persecuted by various US government agencies. In response, the lawmakers have called on Quiboloy to attend the House inquiry into his network, Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), on March 12.
During a press conference, Rep. Francisca “France” Castro of the ACT Teachers Party-list dismissed Quiboloy’s claim that he was being chased by women as a “tall tale.” Castro emphasized that women are not pursuing him out of attraction but rather because of his accountability to them. She urged Quiboloy to face this accountability and attend the hearing of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises regarding the revocation of SMNI’s franchise.
Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas highlighted the reason why women are pursuing Quiboloy, stating that many of them were victims of his alleged human trafficking scheme. Brosas asserted that those who have accused Quiboloy of rape are seeking justice, not pursuing him out of personal motives. She also criticized the church leader for using the pretext of danger to evade congressional inquiries.
In addition to the House probe, the Senate has also subpoenaed Quiboloy to attend hearings by the Women and Children Committee, which are investigating alleged sexual misconduct cases. Brosas dismissed Quiboloy’s threats as mere words from someone who feels cornered. She emphasized that he needs to face the allegations against him.
Rep. Castro, who previously claimed that former president Rodrigo Duterte threatened her life during an SMNI program, advised Quiboloy to take legal action if he genuinely feels threatened. She shared her own experience of filing a case in court and encouraged Quiboloy to do the same.
Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre emphasized that Quiboloy’s status as an appointed son of God does not exempt him from the law. Acidre firmly stated that nobody is above the law and that Quiboloy cannot defy it.
The lawmakers’ criticisms and demands for Quiboloy to attend the House inquiry reflect the need for accountability and justice. They reject Quiboloy’s claims of being chased by women and assert that the pursuit of justice and the investigation into alleged misconduct should take precedence. Quiboloy’s attempts to evade scrutiny will not deter the lawmakers from seeking the truth and ensuring that the allegations against him are properly addressed.
It is crucial for Quiboloy to attend the House inquiry and cooperate fully with the investigation. By doing so, he will have the opportunity to present his side of the story and address the concerns raised by the lawmakers and the public. The pursuit of justice and accountability should be the focus, and all individuals, regardless of their status or position, should be held to the same standards under the law.
