MANILA, Philippines: Most parts of the country will continue to experience cold and windy mornings until next month due to the northeast monsoon locally known as “amihan.”

The cold breeze would be more prevalent during the early mornings, according to Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) administrator. He mentioned that the cold mornings are being felt in many parts of the country, particularly in the eastern part of Luzon, Visayas, and some areas in Mindanao.

“Although there are breaks, it’s common and expected during January, but this cold breeze would last until next month,” Servando explained.

When asked if the existing El Niño phenomenon is affecting the cold temperature, the Pagasa chief confirmed that it was. He clarified that even during the months of November and December, colder temperatures, and even frost, could have been observed without the El Niño phenomenon.

This month, Servando shared that the lowest temperature, 12.1 degrees Celsius, was recorded in La Trinidad, Benguet, followed by 12.9 degrees Celsius in Baguio City on January 12. In Tuguegarao City, the temperature was 18.4 degrees Celsius on January 15, and in Quezon City, it was 20.4 degrees Celsius on January 14.

The northeast monsoon, also known as “amihan,” is defined as the cold and drier winds from the northeast that bring rains over the eastern side of the country, according to the state-run weather agency.

Meanwhile, the same weather system and shear line, where the hot and cold air converge, are bringing rain to parts of the country, especially in the afternoon or at night, explained weather specialist Robert Badrina.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country are likely to have partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated light rains due to “amihan” over the next 24 hours, added the Pagasa forecaster.

As the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” continues to bring cold and windy mornings to the Philippines, it is important for residents to take necessary precautions to stay warm and comfortable during this period. Dressing in layers, staying indoors during the coldest parts of the day, and keeping hydrated are some simple steps that can help individuals cope with the chilly weather.

It is also worth noting that the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on the current cold temperature highlights the complex relationship between weather patterns and climate change. While El Niño can influence temperatures, it is important to remember that colder temperatures and frost can occur even without its presence.

Understanding the local weather patterns, such as the northeast monsoon or “amihan,” is crucial for residents and visitors alike. By staying informed about the weather forecasts from reliable sources like Pagasa, individuals can plan their activities accordingly and ensure their safety and comfort.

Whether enjoying the cool breeze or bracing against the cold mornings, the unique weather patterns in the Philippines offer a diverse and interesting experience for locals and tourists alike.
