Another Gunman Arrested in Connection to the Killing of Brigada FM Anchor in Kidapawan City
In a significant development, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has apprehended another suspect linked to the murder of Brigada FM anchor Eduardo Dizon in Kidapawan City. The arrest took place in Cotabato, as reported by the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) on Friday.
According to Paul Gutierrez, the Executive Director of PTFoMS, the arrest of Junell Jane Andagkit Poten, also known as “Junell Gerozaga,” was made on Thursday past 8:00 p.m. The operation involved a joint effort by the Police Regional Office 12 and the Makilala Municipal Police Station, led by Lt. Col. John Miridel Racho Calinga.
Calinga, in his report to higher police headquarters, stated that an informant provided them with crucial information regarding Poten’s whereabouts. Gutierrez emphasized that Poten/Gerozaga had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on charges of murder. He was allegedly involved in the shooting of Kidapawan Brigada FM radio anchor Eduardo ‘Ed’ Dizon on July 10, 2019, in Kidapawan City.
Dizon was ambushed while driving home along Quezon Boulevard corner Diversion Road Sinsuat Street, Kidapawan City, around 10 p.m. The attack was carried out by two armed suspects, one of whom witnesses positively identified as Poten. Dizon tragically succumbed to his injuries, sustaining five gunshot wounds.
The successful arrest of Poten was made possible through the collaboration of the Police Regional Office 11, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the 1st Cotabato Provincial Mobile Force Company. This joint effort demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators of such heinous crimes to justice.
It is worth noting that Poten’s arrest follows the recent apprehension, on April 29, 2024, of Jolieto “Ricky” Mangumpit. Mangumpit was identified as the gunman responsible for the killing of Juan “DJ Johnny Walker” Jumalon, a broadcaster from Misamis Occidental, on November 5, 2023, in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.
Enhancing Media Security: A Step Towards Justice
The arrest of Junell Jane Andagkit Poten represents a significant stride in the pursuit of justice for the slain Brigada FM anchor Eduardo Dizon. It serves as a reminder of the importance of media security and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in upholding the rule of law.
The media plays a crucial role in any democratic society, serving as the voice of the people and a watchdog for accountability. However, journalists and media professionals often face threats and violence in the line of duty. The murder of Eduardo Dizon and Juan Jumalon are tragic examples of the dangers faced by those who seek to inform and enlighten the public.
The arrest of Poten sends a strong message that such acts of violence against journalists will not go unpunished. It demonstrates the determination of the PNP and other relevant authorities to safeguard media freedom and protect those who dedicate their lives to reporting the truth.
Collaborative Efforts: Strengthening Law Enforcement
The successful arrest of Poten highlights the importance of collaboration among different law enforcement units. In this case, the Police Regional Office 12, Makilala Municipal Police Station, Police Regional Office 11, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the 1st Cotabato Provincial Mobile Force Company worked together to apprehend the suspect.
This collaborative approach is crucial in tackling complex criminal cases and ensuring the safety of the public. By pooling their resources, expertise, and intelligence, these law enforcement agencies can effectively track down and apprehend individuals involved in heinous crimes. Such joint efforts not only lead to the arrest of suspects but also serve as a deterrent to potential criminals.
Implications for Media Security in the Philippines
The arrest of Poten and Mangumpit serves as a significant development in the fight against impunity for crimes committed against journalists in the Philippines. It sends a strong message that the authorities are committed to holding perpetrators accountable, regardless of the time that has passed since the crimes were committed.
However, it is important to acknowledge that these arrests are just one step towards ensuring media security in the country. The Philippines, like many other nations, faces challenges in protecting the freedom of the press and the safety of journalists. Efforts must be made to address the root causes of violence against media professionals and create an environment where they can work without fear of reprisal.
Additionally, it is crucial to strengthen the justice system to ensure that cases involving crimes against journalists are expedited and prosecuted effectively. This includes providing adequate resources and training for law enforcement agencies, as well as establishing specialized units to handle such cases. By doing so, the Philippines can send a clear message that attacks on the media will not be tolerated and that those responsible will face the full force of the law.
In conclusion, the arrest of Junell Jane Andagkit Poten in connection to the killing of Brigada FM anchor Eduardo Dizon is a significant development in the pursuit of justice. It highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and sends a strong message that crimes against journalists will not go unpunished. However, there is still work to be done to ensure media security in the Philippines. By addressing the root causes of violence against journalists and strengthening the justice system, the country can create an environment where freedom of the press is protected, and journalists can work without fear.
