Ateneo de Manila University Tops the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) has been recognized as the top university in the Philippines in the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. However, there has been a significant drop in its ranking compared to the previous year.

Last year, ADMU held the 84th position in the rankings, but this year it has slipped down to the 401-500th place. This decline is also evident in other Philippine universities such as De La Salle University (DLSU) and University of the Philippines (UP), which now share the 501st to 600th place.

The drop in ranking is particularly noteworthy for UP, as it was ranked in the 201-250th place in 2023. On the other hand, the University of Santo Tomas has made its debut in the Times ranking this year, joining Mapua University in the 601st place.

In addition to these universities, several state universities and colleges participated in the ranking as “reporters.” These schools actively took part in the ranking process, even though they were not officially ranked. Among them are Cebu Technological University, Central Luzon State University, Mariano Marcos State University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Tarlac Agricultural University, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, and Visayas State University.

Significance of Research Universities in National and Global Contexts

Commenting on the ranking of DLSU, Vice President for Research and Innovation Raymond Tan emphasized the role of research universities in contributing to national and global interests by advancing the state of human knowledge. Tan stated, “International rankings provide us with a yardstick to measure how we fare against these expectations.”

Top Asian Universities and Their Representation

The top five Asian universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings are Tsinghua University, Peking University, the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and the University of Tokyo.

Mainland China universities dominate the list with 33 institutions among the top 100 schools. South Korea follows with 16 universities, while Japan has the highest representation with 119 universities. India also has a notable presence with 19 universities.

Evaluating Universities on Core Missions

The Times Higher Education evaluates universities based on their core missions, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. This comprehensive approach ensures a balanced comparison among institutions.

The 2024 rankings introduced significant updates to the methodology while retaining the same 18 performance indicators used in the World University Rankings. A total of 739 universities across 31 countries in Asia participated in the ranking process, making it a comprehensive assessment of the region’s higher education institutions.
