SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has emphasized the urgent need for accessible healthcare services in the Philippines in response to a recent survey conducted by OCTA. The survey revealed that health remains the top concern among Filipinos, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue comprehensively.

According to Sen. Go, the focus on healthcare is not just about combating diseases but adopting a holistic approach to ensure that every Filipino has access to medical services, adequate nutrition, and a healthy environment. He serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, making him well-versed in the challenges faced by the healthcare system.

The Tugon ng Masa survey, conducted from December 10 to 14, showed that 71 percent of respondents prioritize staying healthy and avoiding illness. This marks a significant increase from previous surveys, indicating a growing awareness of the importance of personal health. Additionally, the survey highlighted the increasing concern about food security, with 50 percent of respondents emphasizing the need for sufficient daily food intake.

This rise in concern is mirrored by the reported increase in involuntary hunger, which rose from 10 percent in October to 14 percent in December of the same year. These figures underscore the pressing need for accessible healthcare and adequate nutrition in the country.

Sen. Go emphasizes that good health is crucial for productivity and that illness can have a detrimental impact on both the physical and economic well-being of individuals. He acknowledges the exorbitant cost of healthcare in the Philippines, which places a significant burden on many families. For some, a single illness can wipe out their savings, forcing children to leave school and work to support their families’ survival.

To address these challenges, Sen. Go played a pivotal role in the creation of Republic Act 11463, also known as the “Malasakit Centers Act of 2019.” These centers serve as a collaboration between various government agencies, working together to minimize healthcare costs for Filipinos. The aim is to reduce hospital expenses to the lowest possible amount, ensuring that patients and their families have a convenient solution to avail medical assistance from the government.

The establishment of Malasakit centers is a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility in the Philippines. By streamlining efforts and reducing costs, these centers provide a lifeline for those who are burdened by the high expenses associated with medical treatments. This initiative not only ensures that healthcare is more affordable but also helps alleviate the financial strain on families, allowing them to prioritize education and overall well-being.

In conclusion, Sen. Go’s advocacy for accessible healthcare in the Philippines is a response to the growing concerns of Filipinos regarding their health and well-being. The Tugon ng Masa survey highlights the importance of addressing these concerns comprehensively, including access to medical services and adequate nutrition. With the establishment of Malasakit centers, efforts are being made to reduce healthcare costs and provide convenient solutions for Filipinos in need. By prioritizing accessible healthcare, the country can pave the way for a healthier and more prosperous future for all its citizens.
