Manila Bay: A Car-Free Oasis for Healthy Lifestyles
In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and provide a safe space for physical activities, a portion of Manila Bay along Roxas Boulevard will be closed to motorists every Sunday, starting May 26. This initiative, known as the Move Manila Program, aims to encourage residents of Manila and other parts of the National Capital Region to freely and safely run, jog, walk, exercise, and bike along the iconic boulevard.
The Move Manila Program was officially launched with the signing of Ordinance No. 9047 by Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan. This ordinance not only makes Roxas Boulevard partly car-free but also seeks to motivate people to prioritize their well-being and appreciate the beauty of the Manila Bay area.
Promoting Health and Well-being
Mayor Lacuna-Pangan expressed her personal commitment to ensuring the success of this program by personally inspecting Roxas Boulevard to ensure its readiness for the public. Her dedication to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for physical activities is evident in her efforts to clear the road, sidewalk, bay walk, and connecting roads of any hazards and garbage.
From 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Sundays, residents of Manila and the surrounding areas can engage in various physical activities with their families, including children, along the stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos Circle to Quirino Avenue. This designated car-free zone will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to exercise while appreciating the historical, cultural, and economic significance of Roxas Boulevard.
Embracing a Different Perspective
The implementation of the Move Manila Program offers a chance for people to experience Roxas Boulevard from a different perspective. Instead of the sights passing by in a blur while riding in a vehicle, individuals can now take the time to truly appreciate the beauty and significance of this iconic boulevard while walking, jogging, running, or biking. It is a chance to connect with the surroundings and immerse oneself in the rich history and culture that Roxas Boulevard embodies.
Mayor Lacuna-Pangan has also taken steps to ensure the smooth implementation of this program. She has instructed concerned city hall departments to notify the buildings, businesses, residents, and offices along Roxas Boulevard, allowing them to participate and make the necessary adjustments to their Sunday schedules. This collaborative effort aims to create a sense of community and inclusivity, encouraging everyone to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle.
Providing Support and Guidance
The Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau will play a crucial role in facilitating the success of the Move Manila Program. They will issue traffic advisories and guides to inform the public about the location of water stations, parking areas, and first aid stations. This comprehensive approach ensures that participants have access to essential amenities and resources, further enhancing their experience along Roxas Boulevard.
By closing a portion of Roxas Boulevard to motorists and transforming it into a car-free oasis, Manila is taking a significant step towards promoting healthier lifestyles and creating a space for the community to come together. The Move Manila Program not only encourages physical activities but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the beauty, history, and culture that Roxas Boulevard represents. It is an opportunity for individuals to prioritize their well-being, connect with their surroundings, and embrace a more active and fulfilling lifestyle.
