The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Assures Highest Protection for Filipino Seafarers in Germany
The recent missile attack on a Barbados-flagged vessel by Houthi rebels has raised concerns about the safety of Filipino seafarers. However, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in the Philippines is confident that the German government will provide the highest protection for Filipino seafarers in their ports.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Visit to Germany
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is currently on a three-day working visit to Berlin, where he is expected to witness the signing of a maritime agreement between the Philippines and Germany. This agreement will further strengthen cooperation in the maritime sector and facilitate trade and mobility of Philippine and German-owned vessels.
During a briefing in Malacañang, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega expressed his confidence in the German government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Filipino seafarers. He stated, “We do expect that they will give the highest protection to our seafarers for ships bound for Germany, German ports, and German-flagged vessels.”
Expectations from the German Government
The DFA also expects the German government to join calls for an end to the current attacks and the release of seafarers still being held hostage. The attack on the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier M/V True Confidence resulted in the death of two Filipino seafarers, whose remains have yet to be recovered.
De Vega further shared that the 11 surviving mariners who were injured in the attack have arrived in Manila, with two others with severe injuries expected to arrive in the next few days. The DFA anticipates that the German government will lend its voice to the international community’s efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers.
Strengthening Cooperation in the Maritime Sector
The signing of the joint declaration of intent (JDI) between the Philippines and Germany will further enhance cooperation in the maritime sector. This agreement will not only focus on the safety and protection of seafarers but also facilitate trade and mobility of Philippine and German-owned vessels.
By strengthening cooperation between the two countries, both the Philippines and Germany aim to create a safer and more efficient maritime environment. This will not only benefit Filipino seafarers but also contribute to the growth and development of the global maritime industry.
Conclusion
The DFA’s confidence in the German government’s commitment to providing the highest protection for Filipino seafarers is reassuring. The signing of the maritime agreement between the Philippines and Germany will further strengthen cooperation in the maritime sector and ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers.
As the international community comes together to condemn the recent attacks and call for the release of seafarers still being held hostage, the support of the German government is crucial. By working together, countries can create a safer and more secure environment for seafarers, facilitating trade and mobility while upholding their rights and protection.
