The Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) recently paid tribute to former Senate president and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, Juan Ponce Enrile (JPE), by issuing personalized stamps and a commemorative cover in celebration of his 100th birthday on February 14. The stamp was unveiled at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang during a lunch party hosted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Living to 100 years old is a remarkable achievement, and it is worth celebrating. JPE’s political career has spanned over six decades, making him an inspiration to us all. Postmaster General Luis Carlos expressed his admiration for JPE’s collective wisdom and experience, acknowledging the significant contributions he has made to the country.

During his career in government service, JPE held various positions of great importance. He began his journey in public office as the finance undersecretary under President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. Later, he served as the acting head of the Insurance Commission, where he introduced amendments to the rules and regulations that are still included in the current Insurance Code of the Philippines. JPE also took on roles such as acting Customs commissioner, acting finance secretary, chairman of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of the Philippines, and defense secretary under Marcos Sr.

JPE’s dedication to public service extended to the legislative branch as well. He served four terms in the Senate and became the 21st Senate president during the 15th Congress from 2008 to 2013. Additionally, he represented Cagayan’s first district as a member of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1995. Even at the age of 98, JPE returned to government service in 2022 as the chief presidential legal counsel.

The issuance of personalized stamps to Filipino centenarians, including JPE, is based on Republic Act 10868, also known as the “Centenarian Act of 2016.” This law honors and grants additional benefits and privileges to Filipinos who reach the remarkable age of 100.

The commemorative cover not only celebrates JPE’s milestone birthday but also recognizes the exceptional contributions he has made to the country throughout his career. It is a testament to his enduring legacy and the impact he has had on the nation.

In addition to honoring JPE, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also paid tribute to Apo Whang-Od, a legendary veteran tattoo artist who turned 106 on February 17. This recognition of both JPE and Apo Whang-Od highlights the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the wisdom and achievements of our elderly citizens.

As we celebrate JPE’s 100th birthday, we are reminded of the significance of his life and career. His dedication to public service, his contributions to the country’s laws and regulations, and his leadership in the Senate make him a figure worthy of admiration and respect. JPE’s journey serves as an inspiration to future generations, showing them the value of commitment and the impact one can make through years of service.

The personalized stamps and commemorative cover issued by PHLPost not only honor JPE but also serve as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and valuing the achievements of our elders. Through these stamps, JPE’s legacy will continue to inspire and remind us of the remarkable individuals who have shaped our nation’s history.

In conclusion, the celebration of Juan Ponce Enrile’s 100th birthday through personalized stamps and a commemorative cover is a fitting tribute to his remarkable life and career. His contributions to the country, his dedication to public service, and his longevity serve as an inspiration to all. Let us continue to honor and appreciate the wisdom and achievements of our elderly citizens, recognizing the impact they have made and the lessons they can teach us.
